Our story
Beth has been an artist since she was a child. She experimented with paints, starting with acrylics and oils, and eventually fell in love with watercolor. With more time on her hands now after raising her large family with her husband Gary, she started to paint for fun and mostly created greeting cards. Beth had the idea of sewing a border around the watercolor image on the card to create a frame of sorts, but since she doesn’t sew, she asked her sister Julie for help.
Julie has been sewing since she was about 8 years old, when she learned to sew on her Mom’s Necchi sewing machine, which now resides in the 110 year old farmhouse that she and her husband Don have spent summers at for the past 25 years. She started making Barbie clothes and moved on to making her own clothing in junior high school. She loved sewing, but also learned to knit and crochet, branching out into embroidery and counted cross stitch and any other fiber arts that she could find.
People have asked us where the name Painterly Press came from. Beth took an art class many years ago, and the instructor suggested that the students make their work more “painterly” (a hard to define word, but felt, nonetheless) and she applied it to her creations. When she started creating cards, the word “press” completed “Painterly Press” to suggest the printing process of turning her painted work into cards by reproducing them.
Beth and Julie combined their love of creating with their love of being together. So, they started experimenting by cutting out designs using beautiful fabrics and sewing them into cards. These unique items are now available for you to order!
Best,
Julie & Beth
